1  Shirib is a typical poetic form of the Hawiye Clan.

2  Aden Abdulle Osman, the first president of the Republic of Somalia, democratically elected in 1960. He held office until 1967. After losing elections, he retired to private life. Aden Abdulle belongs to the Hawiye clan.

3  Abdirashiid Ali Sharmarke, Prime Minister from 1960 to 1964. In 1967 he was also the second head of state to be democratically elected. Sharmarke belongs to the Majeerteen subclan.

4  Abdirizaaq Hagi Hussein, Prime Minister in 1964. Hagi Hussien belongs to the Majeerteen subclan.

5  Faqash, literally 'swine', is a term which was initially coined to describe the soldiers in Siad Barre's regime, then to define the dictator's subclan and finally, at the time of the clan cleansing in 1991, to define the entire Darood clan.

6  Mohamud Sheikh Osmaan led a failed coup against Siad Barre's regime in 1978 and paid for it with his life.

7  The Somali Youth League was the main nationalist-independence party and it considered clannism as a obstacle to the emancipation of Somali society.
