International Conference
"The Dante Commentary Tradition:
Critical Discourse in the Making"

Manchester, 1st-3rd April 2005
The Council Chamber, Whitworth Building

This conference aims to create a forum for scholarly
debate not only on the significance of the Dante
commentary tradition to the study of the Comedy, but
also on its broader impact on the evolution of the
history of ideas, and on its contribution to the
establishment of literary criticism. In the attempt
to provide solutions to the epistemological questions
offered by the text, ancient and modern commentators
developed intellectual paradigms which reflected and
contributed to the evolution of the history of ideas
in Europe. At the same time, this tradition also
established aesthetic and technical categories on
which western literary criticism would subsequently
thrive. In other words, this critical tradition bears
witness to the evolution of critical enquiry, and to
the development of notions of literature, thus
decisively contributing to the construction of
literary canons and to the establishment of critical
practice as we know it.
This conference will provide an appropriate opportunity
to gather, for the first time in the UK, all the voices
and views of the last decade on the Comedy’s exegetic
tradition, not only to stimulate a dialogue between
them but also to provide innovative approaches to this
multifaceted topic, essential to the study of Dante,
and to the development of critical discourse in Europe.
The speakers invited to take part to this event include
eminent international authorities in the field, as well
as young British and Italian scholars.
