"Orality and literacy in Italian culture"
Friday 10 and Saturday 11 May 2002
Institute of Romance Studies, Senate House, University of
London - CFP: 15 Jan. 2002

Organiser: Michael Caesar (University of Birmingham) with
the assistance of Marina Spunta (University of Leicester)
Sponsored by: The Society for Italian Studies

The conference provides an opportunity to take stock of
recent and ongoing research in topics which straddle the
boundaries between 'oral' and 'written' cultures in Italy
and Italian-speaking communities, and which explore
critically the relationship between them.
Among the issues which will be addressed are: the presence
of oral tradition in medieval and early modern culture;
the changing role of orality in relation to print and new
electronic media; the representation of orality in written
texts; orality in theatre and cinema; reflections on voice
and subjectivity; and linguistic perspectives on the spoken
and the written.

Proposals are therefore invited for papers of approximately
twenty minutes' delivery time in length on these and
related topics.
Proposals should comprise an abstract of around 200 words
and contact details, and should be sent by email to
Michael Caesar on
to arrive no later than 15 January 2002 (earlier if
possible). You will be notified of the outcome of your
proposal by 31 January 2002.
